From The Grand Tour “Lochdown” special we have Richard’s vivid green 1971–73 Buick Riviera “Boattail.” Under its sculpted hood sits the original smooth 7.5 litre 455 V8, later boosted with a supercharger that he estimates adds roughly 100 hp. He also cheekily installed a tall Daytona style wing, which gave the Riviera a “bold, soulful personality” on Scotland’s roads. He clearly bonded with this luxo-barge and even took it home, though when he tried to fire it up post-filming, it proved reluctant, reportedly low on fuel and in need of some TLC. Let’s hope it runs!
Next, we have Richard’s Chevrolet SSR, featured in The Grand Tour “Eurocrash” It’s a bright yellow retro-styled pickup that perfectly matches his love for quirky, characterful vehicles. Despite its oddball design, a convertible hard-top truck with a Corvette-sourced V8 under the bonnet, the SSR proved both amusing and impractical on their road trip across Eastern Europe. From overheating issues to a surprise sound system prank by James May, the SSR was a constant source of entertainment. Richard calls it “a truck with a sense of humour.” Come and decide for yourselves.
If rally-bred road-weapons are more your speed Richard’s iconic Subaru Impreza WRX STI, nicknamed “Martin”, will be joining the party. “Martin” starred in The Grand Tour’ “A Scandi Flick” where he tackled icy terrains across Scandinavia. Initially wrapped in a parody “Martini” livery, the rally-spec WRX with its AWD and turbocharged boxer engine quickly became Hammond’s favourite ever show car. After the shoot, he bought it outright and entrusted the DriveTribe crew to restore and upgrade it - ditching the wrap, reinforcing the chassis, and tuning it from around 356 hp to a whopping 530 hp with coilovers, fresh brakes and a stroker kit. The result? A riotous, blue and gold rally monster that perfectly embodies Richard’s passion for raw, emotive driving.
Richard’s beloved Mk I Ford Capri GXL, from The Grand Tour’s emotional finale “One for the Road”, was his dream pick - a 1970s rear drive coupe that he always longed to own. The car, yellow and battle scarred from their Zimbabwe road trip, bounced its way across rough terrain and even shed its exhaust into the passenger seat, perfectly capturing his cheeky spirit. This Capri was the ideal swansong: nostalgic, characterful, and all his own.
The 1972 MGB GT made its memorable debut on Top Gear as Richard’s final feature car and later appeared in a classic car challenge on The Grand Tour. He purchased the car during filming, describing it as “the archetypal every-man classic” and praising its beautifully balanced, Pininfarina-styled design. He has since shifted the car into vintage racing under his ‘Team Smallest Cog’ banner, taking part in races at Oulton Park to showcase his restoration and racing ambitions. The MGB GT remains a beloved part of his collection, an evergreen British sports car that blends nostalgia, driving purity, and a passion for classic motoring.
And no Richard Hammond collection would be complete without “Oliver”. Richard discovered this charming 1963 Opel Kadett during the iconic Top Gear Botswana Special in 2007. Purchased for just £1,200 in Africa, this diminutive rear drive coupe quickly stole his heart, so much so that he named it and referred to it as a loyal companion, praising its “happy” nature. Despite its modest 1.0 litre engine and impromptu river dunking, Oliver endured the 1,000-mile journey across rough terrain, earning Richard’s emotional attachment. He had it shipped back to the UK, where it has been lovingly restored, and even taught his daughter Izzy to drive in it, making Oliver more than just a car, but a family treasure.
